So, you’ve made the decision to study at University of Mpumalanga (UMP) and you want to apply for residence / accommodation. So you want to know more about the application process – how do you apply for residence at UMP?
Application for on-campus residence accommodation should be made at the time of this application. Please note: The University will have limited on-campus residence accommodation space.
This will generally be single or shared accommodation and will only be available to students registered on a full-time basis. Student Housing assists students with a list of accredited private accommodation providers for their consideration.
How to Apply for UMP Hostel – University of Mpumalanga
Residence life is a special experience. Staying in a UMP residence is an extension of students’ university education, where they can benefit from all the facilities and services such as student learning centres, social and sporting activities, life-skills and peer- programmes.
UMP Student Residence
UMP provides different types of accommodation for undergraduate and postgraduate students, on and off campus.
Usually, you will start out in a first-tier residence (full catering), move on to a second-tier residence (senior catering or self-catering) and later, stay in third-tier accommodation (semi-autonomous self-catering).
Each residence has its own history and traditions, but they all try to provide a great experience. Safety is of great importance to UMP, so all residences have strict access control and most are covered by closed-circuit television cameras.
Students with disabilities can be accommodated in different residences. Simply contact the Student Accommodation Office and the Disability Service, and they will address your particular needs.
How To Apply For UMP Student Housing?
Apply for student housing as part of your UMP application for admission. Housing eligibility criteria for first-time entering undergraduates: first-tier student accommodation There are limited places in residence and these are awarded to applicants on the basis of criteria described below.
Meeting some of these criteria will prioritise you an offer of accommodation, while others may only make you eligible for an offer. Further information about the criteria in each of these categories is provided below

UMP Student Residence
Private Accommodation
Any student admitted at UMP, but has not been admitted to the University residences such a student is provided with a list of accredited private accommodation from which the student can contact the accredited private accommodation facilities.
The University has a Policy on the accreditation of private accommodation facilities.
The UMP Private Accommodation Accreditation Committee continuously accredits private accommodation properties within a radius of 60 km maximum.
All accredited private accommodation must provide transportation to the students as part of the accreditation minimum requirements.
The list of accredited private accommodation is available in the office of Student Housing, as well as on the University website.
On Campus
UMP residences offer both single and double-sharing rooms equipped with the appropriate amenities, namely, a single bed, study desk, book shelves, study chair, wardrobe, and study lamp in the rooms.
